WHAT TRAVELS WITH IT · MOOD AND ANXIETY
Anxiety and depression are more common in people with frequent headache. The link runs both ways (bidirectional). Neither one simply causes the other. Saying so does not mean the headache is psychological.

Does anxiety cause headaches, or do headaches cause anxiety?
Two points need to be clear, because this is where people are most often handled badly. Anxiety does not cause migraine. Migraine is a neurological disorder with a strong genetic basis. And living with frequent pain you cannot predict reliably produces anxiety. So the association can run entirely in that direction, and often does.
What is true is that they share biology. The serotonin and noradrenaline systems (serotonergic and noradrenergic) are involved in both. That is why several medications act on both. It is also why untreated mood symptoms make headache harder to control, and the other way around.
Why does untreated anxiety make headaches worse?
Because untreated anxiety or low mood is one of the known drivers that turn episodic headache (on some days) into chronic headache (on most days). It is on the same list as medication overuse and sleep apnea. Leaving it alone while adjusting preventives is one way a plan quietly falls short.
It also changes behavior in ways that raise frequency. People take a dose ahead of an attack that may not come (anticipatory dosing). They avoid activity and other people. Their sleep breaks up. Each of those, on its own, adds headache days. Anticipatory dosing in particular is a direct route into overuse.
How are headache and anxiety treated together?
Behavioral and lifestyle work is about 40 to 50 percent of the treatment plan at this practice. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is given in-house by a licensed clinician trained in pain. It is not referred out. That is on purpose. A referral that takes months and lands with someone who does not work in pain is how this part gets lost.
It is not offered instead of treating the headache. It is offered because the evidence for behavioral approaches on headache frequency is genuinely good. It is also offered because a prescription cannot reach the third driver — a life with no recovery in it.
ONE THING THAT IS URGENT
- Cluster headache in particular is associated with suicidal thinking during severe bouts.
- If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, that is urgent care, not an appointment. In the US, call or text 988.
- It is not a weakness or an overreaction to the pain. It is a known part of this condition, and it is treated.
Frequently asked questions
Are my headaches caused by anxiety?
Anxiety does not cause migraine. It can raise frequency and make control harder. And frequent pain reliably produces anxiety. The link runs both ways.
Does this mean it is psychological?
No. Migraine and tension-type headache are neurological disorders. Treating mood is part of treating them well. It does not recast them as something else.
Will I be referred elsewhere for this?
No — the behavioral work is done in-house here. That is the point.
Can treating anxiety reduce headache days?
Often, yes. This is most true where anticipatory dosing and avoiding activity have taken hold.
How do I know if my headache is from anxiety?
Anxiety does not cause migraine. So the useful question is whether anxiety is feeding the headaches you already have. The signs show in behavior: taking medication in case an attack comes, avoiding activity and people, and sleeping badly. Each of those raises headache days on its own. Frequent pain you cannot predict also produces anxiety. So the arrow often points from the headache to the worry.
How do I get rid of an anxiety headache?
Treat the headache and the anxiety together, not one instead of the other. Behavioral and lifestyle work is about 40 to 50 percent of the treatment plan here. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is given in-house by a licensed clinician trained in pain. The evidence for behavioral approaches in cutting headache frequency is genuinely good. It reaches the part of the problem a prescription cannot.
Can anxiety turn occasional headaches into daily headaches?
It can push them that way. Untreated anxiety or low mood is one of the known drivers of the change from episodic to chronic headache. It is on the same list as medication overuse and sleep apnea. Anticipatory dosing is a direct route into medication overuse. Adjusting preventives while leaving mood untreated is one way a plan quietly falls short.
