A COMMON AND CONSEQUENTIAL MIX-UP
Ordinary high blood pressure does not cause headaches. The belief that it does sends people to check a cuff when they should be doing something else. And, rarely, it stops them acting on the one reading that is an emergency.

Does everyday high blood pressure cause headaches?
Long-term high blood pressure, in the ranges most people are treated for, causes no symptoms. That is not helpful. It is the whole reason it gets called a silent condition, and the reason screening exists. Large studies have again and again failed to find the association people expect between routine hypertension and how often headaches come.
What does happen all the time is the reverse guess. You have a headache. You feel unwell. You check your pressure, and it is up. That is because pain and anxiety raise blood pressure. The headache made the reading, not the other way around. It is a truly hard loop to see from the inside.
THE READING THAT IS AN EMERGENCY
- A hypertensive emergency — very high pressure with symptoms. These include severe headache, confusion, visual change, chest pain, breathlessness, seizure, or weakness.
- Headache with very high pressure in pregnancy or just after delivery. This is even more pressing with swelling or visual change. It is assessed the same day, without exception.
- Those go to an emergency department. Not to a clinic visit, and not to a repeat reading in an hour.
Can blood pressure medication cause headaches?
Several blood pressure drugs cause headache on their own. Vasodilators, drugs that widen blood vessels, are the usual culprits. Someone starts treatment, gets headaches, and decides the pressure is still out of control. The timing is the clue. Say a headache showed up within days to weeks of starting or changing an antihypertensive (blood pressure drug). That calls for a talk with the prescriber, not a higher dose.
How are headaches and high blood pressure connected?
Not through pressure, but underneath it. Insulin resistance and chronic metabolic inflammation raise blood pressure. On their own, they also lower the threshold at which a headache-prone brain fires. So the same person often has both. Treating one does nothing for the other. That is why the link feels real while the cuff readings never explain anything. Add the shared habit driver: short, irregular sleep raises both blood pressure and next-day pain sensitivity. Now you have two problems growing from one terrain. That is why a headache visit here includes bloodwork.
Frequently asked questions
Can high blood pressure cause headaches?
Not in the ordinary treated ranges. It can in a hypertensive emergency, which comes with other symptoms and belongs in an emergency department. It can also cause them in pregnancy-related hypertension.
My pressure is high when I have a headache. Does that mean anything?
Usually it means pain and distress raised the reading. Take it again once the headache has settled, before you draw any conclusion.
Should I stop my blood pressure medication if it gives me headaches?
No. Do not stop on your own. Bring up the timing with your prescriber. Several of these drugs cause headache, and there are other options.
What should I actually be tracking?
Headache days and medication days, not cuff readings. How to keep the diary.
What does a high blood pressure headache feel like?
The headache that blood pressure truly causes comes as part of a hypertensive emergency. That means very high pressure with a severe headache and other symptoms. Those include confusion, visual change, chest pain, breathlessness, seizure or weakness. That goes to an emergency department, not a clinic visit or a repeat reading in an hour. In pregnancy or just after delivery, headache with very high pressure is assessed the same day.
How do you get rid of a blood pressure headache?
Most headaches blamed on blood pressure are not caused by it. So the cuff is the wrong target. Recheck the pressure once the headache has settled, because pain and distress raise the reading. Track headache days and medication days instead of cuff readings. Did the headaches begin within days to weeks of starting or changing a blood pressure drug? Then bring up the timing with your prescriber.
